Game Overview
Three people are responsible for the gothic Metroidvania game Hollow Knight, and together they make up Australia’s Team Cherry: Ari Gibson is in charge of animation and art direction, William Pellen is the lead designer, and David Kazi is the technical guy, while the melancholy music in the darkness of the narrow streets and corners is composed by Christopher Larkin.
Despite the small studio, Team Cherry has developed a game that stands out on every level. Hollow Knight was released in February 2017, added on Steam, and captured the hearts of gamers there, earning rave reviews that put it among the jewels of the Metroidvania genre, as well as constant comparisons to the dark yet breathtaking work of director Tim Burton.
The indie developer is undoubtedly an integral part of the gaming industry these days, and their games are so widely accepted by the vast majority of gamers that it’s not uncommon to see that the indie game you’ve spent the last 30 hours on was developed by a team that numbers less than the fingers of one hand. But regardless, the number of studio members responsible for this game is downright shocking.

Gameplay
The game takes place in the abandoned and neglected city of Dirtmouth, formerly occupied by countless arthropods who are its ancient inhabitants—and you, a warrior of the same species, venture into a vast underground world called Hallownest in hopes of solving the mystery of everyone’s disappearance.
The comparisons to Burton’s highly sought-after work are obvious; Hallownest, with its bizarre insect characters and foreboding environments, is unquestionably inspired by Burton’s works and is no stranger to his famous stop-frame productions.
The artwork—backgrounds and characters—are all hand-drawn and animated to give the world life, and the main character—our Hollow Knight—is no less attractive for his diminutive size. With subdued and sometimes similar color palettes, the game world has to be seen in constant motion to feel its full impact.
However, with all these visual trappings (eye candy for aesthetics seekers in the gaming arena), it’s Hollow Knight’s embrace and refinement of the tried and tested Metroidvania genre that makes it noteworthy for fans of the genre. They give players that sense of the enormity of the world and the scale of the journey that players will embark on from the very first area. And Hollow Knight replicates that feeling very perfectly.
The sense of exploration is omnipresent in the world of Hollow Knight at all times. As in other genre games, your character starts the journey with simple abilities, but as the game progresses and you complete the journey, you gain new abilities and increase the power of your existing skills to help your chances of survival against new and more powerful enemies. Exploring all parts of the map will become an obsession for players who like to complete all the requirements, and each new skill you earn offers you the chance to return to an area that seemed out of reach, only to reveal another world behind it.
A system that will be instantly familiar to fans of Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night—the two games that introduced the term “Metroidvania”—and the team behind Hollow Knight didn’t just adopt the concept into their game because it exists.
The game’s currency, Geo, is lost when you die, but if you manage to fight your way to your death, you can recover your lost money. In an obvious nod to the beloved and unforgiving FromSoftware series, Dark Souls.
