Following the events of the previous instalment, Aloy returns to face a greater danger than the past, which can be described as a strange combination of politics, technology and history. Where everyone thought the threat was gone forever, Aloy must search for the backup version of the Gaia program to stop the pollution and restore order and balance to the world, only to run into new enemies with political intrigues and inter-tribal obstacles that hinder her progress in her mission to save the Earth.

Regalla and her rebels, Sylens and his machinations and shady goals to gain access to knowledge and exploit our heroine, to eliminate HADES who seems to have handed over dangerous information regarding the destruction of life on Earth to Sylens, and to search for the other sub-programs that Gaia needs, she will face a storm of new threats.

Game Overview

Horizon Forbidden West: Complete Edition is an action, adventure, role-playing, sci-fi, and open-world game developed by Guerrilla Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment in March 2024. The game continues the events of its first instalment, moving to the Forbidden West, a new region where the heroine Eloy must move to save the world from a great evil.

Unfortunately, Eloi’s character is still a superficial girl who sometimes comes across as a side character who doesn’t show any emotion on her face at the right moments. Unlike Eloi, the other side characters in the game are strong and will play a significant role in getting you into the story, which is better than the first part.

Gameplay

The gameplay isn’t much different from the previous instalment, but it’s better in several ways. The first is the fluidity that the player will feel most of the time, and this is its strong point from the first hours of play.

Combat

The game retains its core ideas and feeds them with some new ones to provide an improved experience. Fighting robotic monsters is still the primary focus of the gameplay system, where you have to hit their weaknesses to eliminate them and use the appropriate elements against them, such as water, fire, and others.

There is a diverse arsenal of weapons, from arrows to bombs and traps. Special abilities have also been introduced for weapons, such as shooting three arrows at once or firing a concentrated arrow from far away.

Abilities

Aloy’s abilities in close-range engagements have been improved. There will be more options when using the spear against human enemies, with Valour Surges based on a specific accumulation that triggers exceptional and customised abilities. Mobility tools, climbing and crossing aids, like the Pullcaster hook, will also be available. Finally, the most fantastic addition is the Shield Wing or the holographic parachute Aloy grabs from enemies.

There are also special abilities, one of which can be activated at a time, that give you an extra boost in specific skills, such as having your arrows hit 50% harder for a certain amount of time. Fighting enemies is fun, and you can deal with them in various ways, and with more enemies and a faster pace, it’s doubly fun.

Resources

The game loves the idea of collecting and assembling. You have to collect various resources, some of which you get from monsters and rare ones, to make weapons, ammunition, and upgrades for multiple gadgets.

The resource search isn’t random. You can turn the search into a mission, and it will tell you where on the map you can find the missing resources to upgrade your weapon, for example. Collecting has become an annoyance, as upgrading just one weapon to the highest level can take you an hour or more of research and combat.

Sometimes it’s not worth it, especially since you’ll change the weapon soon. Another addition that players will welcome is that extra resources you can’t carry will be stored in a chest for you to access later from multiple locations.

Game World

The game is characterised by its large and beautiful world filled with all the landmarks the player imagines. Its map is larger than the previous part and has finer details. This makes you explore the world from side missions and abandoned places to collect resources and gain experience points.

At the beginning and after choosing the difficulty, two options are available to players: the love of exploration, an option in which you discover the world with minimal guidance and assistance. In contrast, the guidance option is an option that guides you to the places that need to be explored more easily.

Graphics and Effects

Physics and wind sounds that differ depending on where you are, whether above or below, with the Tessellation feature that gave rocks and mountains more detailed information, and the quality of the design of water and lakes within the game gave us a feeling that it is a real new generation game.

The details of the characters’ bodies within the game were developed perfectly, and here the real difference between the new part and the past appears. Even the secondary and NPC characters appeared with better and more accurate designs than before, adding an atmosphere of vitality within the game. The game’s colours also make excellent use of the HDR feature in TV screens to show the game’s colours in a deeper and more vibrant way.

Sounds

The sound design is excellent in terms of the sounds of the environment, waves, robots of various types, and the voice performance of the central and side characters.

Composers Joris de Man, Niels van der Leest, and music artist Oleksa Lozowchuk have done a great job of bringing the most moving and profound music to Horizon Forbidden West. Although there was no significant or radical difference from the previous instalment, some new tracks were added occasionally, perhaps to maintain the series’ identity.
