More than 80 developers have been working on it, fine-tuning it down to the last detail. On paper, this new game promises to revolutionize virtual reality, but how does it actually play? To find out, strap on your headset, grab the controllers, and let’s begin our adventure into the world of Half-Life.
Game Overview
Half-Life: Alyx is an action, adventure, survival, puzzle, horror, puzzle, and sci-fi game developed and published by Valve in March 2020. Alyx is not a direct continuation of the Half-Life storyline, but takes place five years before the events of Episode 2. The game has the luxury of not placing the player in the shoes of series protagonist Gordon Freeman. Instead, Alyx Vance, whom we met in Half-Life 2, takes on the role of heroine.
Gameplay
As Alyx, you’re a 19-year-old rebel waging war against a force of alien invaders known as the Combine. Your father, Eli, has been kidnapped by the Civil Defence, and you must venture into the city’s alien-infested quarantine zone to rescue him.
To help you on this rescue mission, you have several virtual reality-enhanced tools at your disposal. A pair of gravity gloves enables him to move objects with a simple flick of the wrist. These can then be captured in the air by pressing the controller’s grip buttons. Alongside this, you have a remote device for hacking into electrical systems and several weapons, all of which have to be manipulated, directed, and recharged using virtual hands.
Performing reconnaissance for the rebels, Alyx stands atop a balcony overlooking the rooftops of City 17. The view of the city’s pastel-colored houses, sitting in the cobalt-blue shadow of the Combine’s imposing citadel, is breathtaking. Not only does this set the mood for the great adventure ahead, but Valve also lets you know that you’re part of this world and can interact with it.
Environment
After the intro, it’s time to descend into City 17’s quarantine zone, a dark labyrinth where most of the game takes place. During this conquest, certain areas evoke a sense of claustrophobia and terror, where getting out into the open provides as much freshness and freedom as in real life. This adventure requires players to navigate some of the scariest and most challenging environments ever seen in a video game.
Among them, fleshy crabs leap in your face from dark air ducts. Zombies trailing bloody claws, giant fetus-like bodies, and the swollen skull of Nihilanth. Barnacles with sticky, dangling tongues belch and spit human remains directly at you. The walls of the apartments are covered with tendrils and alien flowers. Corpses on desks silently dare you to push them aside for ammunition.
Atmosphere being an important element of any VR experience, Half-Life Alyx offers a suitably mixed selection.
Combat
Like the original Half-Life, there are times when you have to prove yourself capable of climbing back up through oppressive sewers and tunnels to find yourself under the sky. Often, it’s just a brief respite to wander out of claustrophobic ceilings and corridors, until you discover that the only way to progress is back down again.
In the second half of the game, ants infest the city, and they seem a lot more fun to fight than crabs and zombies. To stop them, you’ll need to target their limbs and abdomens. This is no easy task when a pack of them rushes towards you and you try to reload one of your weapons.
Even an anteater with one leg still attached will stubbornly drag itself towards you. He’ll do his best impression of arachnids in Starship Troopers. Battles are generally fairly short, but they’re still extremely fun, chaotic, and challenging. Soldiers start to appear more often in the second half of the game, both to fight you and the ants.
Weapons
Unlike Gordon Freeman, Alyx Vance doesn’t have a massive arsenal with which to face his enemies. In addition to a standard pistol, you’ll eventually acquire a one-handed shotgun and a Combine pulse pistol. The pistols each have a different reloading method, making them pleasingly distinct.
The shotgun opens to allow you to insert two fresh cartridges before closing it again with a quick movement of the hand. The Combine impulse pistol loads cartridges from a magazine with a quick lateral movement of the wrist.
Characters
Half-Life Alyx introduces new characters alongside the familiar ones. Russell (dubbed by Rhys Darby) nicely replaces Dr. Kleiner, delivering a mix of jokes, information, and warm commentary on your predicament. Eli (now dubbed by James Moses Black) is great as a father not only concerned about his daughter, but also extremely confident in her abilities.
And of course, there’s Alyx herself (now dubbed by Ozioma Akagha) who, as in Half-Life 2, remains a source of humor, determination, and empathy. The player immediately feels at ease embodying her, having spent so much time with her in Half-Life 2 and subsequent episodes. And it’s wonderful not just to spend time with her, but to walk in her shoes.
NoVR Mod
A fan of the game has recreated the story of Gordon Freeman’s future ally in an animated film. Entitled Half-Life: Alyx Animated. Conceived with Source 2 Filmmaker, this film uses conversations from the game. It tells the story of Alyx Vance’s attempt to save her father from the clutches of the City 17 Combine. It’s a great way to rediscover the history of one of the most memorable games in virtual reality.
Alternatively, a mod exists to play the game in a non-VR version. While this allows many people to access Half-Life: Alyx, it does detract from the overall experience.
