The game returns with the fifth edition with a different region and map (but this time in Mexico), new challenges, and a large number of cars.

Game Overview

Forza Horizon 5 is an open-world racing game developed by Playground Games and published by Xbox Game Studios in November 2021 as the fifth game in the series. The game is considered the first released for the new generation of developer Playground Games, and is their first challenge as there are more support and technical capabilities available.

Gameplay

After traveling around the UK in Part 4, Mexico is now in the spotlight in Part 5. We’re in for the largest map in the series and the most diverse environments. All you have to do is set up your character with more customization options, from nicknames to clothes, costumes, and more, to make you feel more connected to the rest of the game and that it’s not just about cars and racing.

This gives your driver a greater identity than usual, and you find that everyone in the game from the AI characters communicates with you wherever you are to discuss your upcoming tournaments and adventures.

Campaign mode

The main game mode is the story mode (Horizon Adventure), where you can progress the story as you see fit, and there is no particular order to finish or go through the races in sequence. The story contains different parts of the challenges presented in the form of different events, and each event or celebration offers a different and unique race. Such as Horizon Festival Mexico, Horizon Apex, Horizon Wilds, Horizon Baja, Horizon Rush & Horizon Street Scene.

The types of races are as varied and diverse as the rest of the series, offering a good number of race types and challenges both on racetracks and in different open areas in Mexico, where you can create your own challenge, that other players can participate in and even rate!

Multiplayer modes

If you’re in single-player mode, there’s Horizon Life’s shared world, where you and other players across the network are in the same open world as the single-player mode. Everyone does their own activity without interruption from other players. All single-player events can be played at the same level of progression without any difference or interruption from anyone else on the server, especially with the support of the awesome Ghost Mode, which keeps you away from the saboteurs who always confront you.

What you can do in the shared world is all the events available in the single-player mode in the open world freely, and the rest of the events, such as Co-op or competitive races, are nicely categorized to make it easier for you to choose from the list directly.

There are four basic options: The first and second options are Open Racing and Open Drifting, which provide all the usual single-player activities, the third option is Playground Games events such as Flag Control or King and Infection, and then there is the fourth and final option that appears for the first time in the series, The Eliminator or Elimination, which provides Battle Royale or Battle Royale mode for car games.

Environment

The fifth installment of the game is the largest and most beautiful in terms of graphics and landscapes.’ The map of Mexico, or the playing area, is the largest in the series, and the map is about 50% larger than the map of Britain in Part 4.

The map of Mexico is not lacking in landscapes! There are 11 regions with different terrains and landmarks in this part’ Each region may have different details and the weather may be different. From small towns and villages, to beaches and seashores, to rocky mountains and dense forests!

Cars

Like the rest of Forza Horizon, you can browse the very large car catalog, inspect the cars inside and out, and see the full details of the cars. The number of cars in the game is up to 526 at the moment, with the possibility of increasing the number of cars in future DLCs or Season Pass.

At first, the car collection is very small, but as you progress through the game and finish races, you can get many cars either by playing the game or buying cars from the dealership using the money you earn from races and challenges.

Customizations

You can modify (almost) everything about the car, such as modifying the car’s performance down to the smallest technical and artistic details, where you can even listen to the sounds during the process. However, if you want to transfer your favorite cars to other racing categories in the game, the modification can be completely different from one car to another.

Control

The series has reached a point where you can feel the simulated weight of the vehicles and the difference between car sizes and weights when cornering, climbing, or off-roading, where each vehicle has a different feel.

Festivals

There are 6 main festivals in this section, each with its own color and special events, and you can advance in each festival individually, at the time you want. Each festival has stories and events beyond the main races, for example: There are a series of missions in the form of “Horizon Stories” in which your character interacts with other characters in the game world as if it were a mini story mode.

Also, when you unlock all the events within a festival, let’s say Horizon Baja, you will reach the grand final race of that festival, which usually takes you on a big lap around Mexico in a long-duration race. So the game will have 6 giant races, namely: The Goliath, The Colossus, The Gauntlet, The Titan, The Juggernaut, and finally The Marathon.

Graphics

Compared to the previous installment, the landscapes now look very flat and lifeless in Horizon 4, the water looks less realistic, the sky is less dynamic, and speaking of the sky and its details, there’s no better way to describe it than in pictures, this installment is one of the best games in general that depicts the appearance of the sky and clouds both at night and in the morning.

The sunlight and more dynamic lighting, in general, provides a great view, and a lot of time was spent just looking at the sky without doing anything else, driving at night is another case of adrenaline rush, there is nothing like taking your favorite car and taking a night drive in Mexico.

The Playground Games team took a large number of photographs of the sky in Mexico, and in Mexico specifically, these shots were taken at 12K resolution and they used this data to make the sky more realistic and dynamic during the game, which is precisely why it looks so beautiful.

The developer also used “photogrammetry data” or Photogrammetry, which is footage taken directly from the real world via 360-degree photography and then brought directly into the game.

Sounds

It is interesting to see this amazing development at the level of acoustics, not only the music and Soundtracks, but the engine sounds, which have become more realistic, the engine sounds for each car are different and there may be a disparity, and overall the game implements this very professionally.

Natural sounds, such as thunder and lightning and when entering a sandy area, seem to be highly polished as well, along with the sounds of birds that you can hear in a specific number of places on the game map, it can be said that the audio aspect in the game is well designed to complement the gaming experience and the amazing graphics.
