Five Nights at Freddy’s 4 is a terrifying Survival Horror game designed and published by Scott Cawthon in 2015. It represents a quarter of the FNaF Series and takes us to the atmosphere of a children’s bedroom, where you’ll have to fight to survive, avoiding the terrible attacks of animatronics that will try to kill you.
Game Overview
In this fourth part of the series, you can expect new mechanics plus complex puzzles and terrifying animatronics ready to haunt you in dream and reality. This project is an introduction to the events of FNaF 2 and takes us to the distant 1983, becoming the first in the series according to the timeline. In this fascinating chapter of the original plot, you’ll once again have to defend your own life. In fact, it’s a series of short games that reveal the story of a mysterious boy – the main character of this investigation. The first six mini-games cover various events linked to the “vacation”.
You’ll assume the role of a mysterious child, and your mission at the very beginning has yet to be revealed. You’re in charge of surviving until the dawn, carefully watching the doors and scaring off any annoying creatures that may get into your closet or even climb onto the bed behind you. Your only ally is the ability to chase away the creatures that sneak down the hall.
But be vigilant and obey every rustle. After all, if something gets too close, then glowing eyes in the dark can be the death of you. Post-release reviews were mixed: the game praised its tense atmosphere but provoked controversy over the mechanics. It’s important to note that FNaF 4 – is the only game in the entire FNaF series with no spoken dialogues – this gives it a special singularity.
Gameplay
Unlike its predecessors, the game takes place in the children’s bedroom, not in the security office. You must play as the child and face four animatronics from the first part: Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy for four nights, then with Nightmare Fredbear on the fifth night. Each night lasts from midnight to morning in game mode and around six minutes in real-time. Inadequate control over four entry points – bed, two side doors, and a closet – can lead to an animatronic attack and the start of the night right from the start.
You’ll need to use sound signals, like muffled steps, to determine the proximity of animatronics, as well as using a flashlight and closing doors for self-defense. Between nights, you’ll be transported to mini-games in the style of “faux-retro” that speak to the life and violence experienced by the child.
In “Fun with Plushtrap” (in one of the updates known as “Halloween”, Plushtrap is replaced by a nightmare version of Balloon Boy from the second part of FNaF) a plush version appears as the main animatronic. In the previous version, to stop him, it was necessary to lure an animatronic to a certain spot indicated by a letter X on the floor and keep him there for a certain time. Successful completion of this task enabled us to start the following night at 2:00 AM (or 1:00 AM in test mode).
The antagonists of the first four nights are nightmares Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy, while on the fifth night, there comes a point when the only threatening character becomes Nightmare Fredbear. Completion of all five mini-games opens the door to an additional sixth night, where four animatronics begin to haunt you until the nightmarish Fredbear takes over at 4:00 AM…
Passing the sixth night will unlock another star, and the seventh, called “Nightmare”, is a real challenge with aggressive animatronics and a unique completion screen different from the other characters. Other unlocked content includes galleries of various animatronics and horror moments, as well as 3D models of Fredbear and Foxy.
