Game Overview
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is an action, adventure, role-playing, and open-world game developed by CyberConnect2 and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment in January 2020. It’s a mix of Japanese RPG and slasher, an action game in which you must travel to the “Dragon Ball” universe and live the life of Son Goku, a kid with supernatural powers.
The game’s events offer a new insight into the life of young Son Goku and his friends. You can travel through the local expanses with Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, and other heroes, fight many enemies, curb the power and strength you can only dream of, and much more.
Gameplay
The game covers the events of the second half of the manga adaptation of Dragon Ball Z, from Raditz’s arrival on Earth to the defeat of Majin Buu. This era of Dragon Ball history has been covered by more video games than any other, but Kakarot may be the best at covering it. As a forty-plus hour open-world RPG, Kakarot tells the story of Z in a detail that no other game before it has done, and sometimes even adds to it.
Through side quests and sometimes the main story, you’ll find appearances by characters from the first half of the manga that didn’t appear in Z, like Launch, explanations of things that weren’t explained, like why Gohan and Vegeta’s tails didn’t grow after they were cut off. Side stories focusing on the characters’ daily lives are mostly found in the breaks between the main manga chapters, where the game offers most of its original content.
Characters
In the game, you play as Saiyans Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, Trunks, Jotunx, and Piccolo, switching between them during story segments, while you can choose who to play as in the free segments. Each character has their fighting style, moves, and separate development tree, where you can focus on developing your favorite character faster than others. Other characters such as Krillin, Tenshinhan, and Yamasha are limited to supporting characters during combat, but are not playable.
Game World
The game’s world is not Seamless but is divided into several regions you choose from a map, covering all the areas you remember from the manga and the original series. From the mountains where Goku fought the Saiyans, to the planet Namek, to the western city and the snowy region where Dr. Jiro’s lab and the Red League army were located. Activities in the open world include simple but entertaining side quests full of fun details for fans of the series, fishing, cooking, playing baseball, learning new moves, and, most importantly, collecting Z Orbs.
Combat
The combat style is similar to that found in Budokai Tenkaichi and Xenoverse, and the game becomes more like an Arena Fighting game than an RPG. The game ignores the weight and presents boss battles at a reasonable level of difficulty, requiring you to understand the boss’s fighting style and movements and know when to dodge, block and attack. The game translates the series’ fights and Goku’s feelings against enemies that are ten times more powerful than he is, among its counterparts.
Controls
The developers didn’t limit players to battles and tasks to be performed, and actually gave you the freedom to enjoy Goko’s life to the fullest. For example, you’ll be able to jump out of your seat and fly to a body of water where you can fish, go for a workout, or just fly over the vast expanse of the world. There are many options, and you can do everything you can think of.
But, of course, everything here is based on battles. And, the battles here are full of combinations of attacks, destruction, powerful combos and blows, from which sparks fly in all directions. You must learn the controls and how to combine different attacks in battles with your enemies.
Upgrades
Another area where the game excels is the feeling of progression. Training and development are a cornerstone of the gameplay and perhaps its most famous element, and being an RPG, Kakarot manages to capture this feeling well, seeing Goku’s Kamehameha grow bigger and bigger until by the end of the game, it’s many times the size of the one that started the game.
While Kaioken consumes life points, Super Saiyan consumes Ki, and the higher the Super Saiyan’s score, the more Ki he consumes. Each transformation has its own strengths and weaknesses, just like in the original manga, and switching between them during combat is smooth, entertaining, and visually beautiful.
Graphics and Sounds
The game is beautiful and translates Dragon Ball’s iconic look to 3D from good to great. Some of the cinematic cutscenes are truly exceptional in their appearance. Sonically, this may be the first Dragon Ball game to use original music composed by Shunsuke Kikuchi, adding a sense of authenticity to the game’s adaptation that most of its predecessors didn’t have.
