Game Overview

Company of Heroes 2 is a strategy and simulation game developed by Relic Entertainment and published by SEGA in June 2013 as the second in the series. The game was a big hit with RTS fans, thanks in particular to its eye-catching graphics and, at the time, unrivalled depth of gameplay. Its sequel, therefore, inevitably raises expectations, but also some fears linked to a change of publisher during development.

The game Western Front Armies adds two new Western Front factions to the list of playable multiplayer armies: Oberkommando West (OKW) and the United States Forces (USF). While the former puts you in charge of an aggressive and powerful army with very specialized and elite units – but in very limited numbers – the latter offers an expeditionary corps that allows for a variety of tactics and combined arms tactics that are very powerful, but will inevitably fall a bit short in the heavy armor department.

Gameplay

The gameplay is very similar to its predecessor. In short, you must capture certain points on the map, yielding a few basic resources: fuel, ammunition, and manpower. All this is then used to construct various buildings, enabling the recruitment of increasingly powerful and original units. From conscripts, we move on to snipers, tanks, and heavy artillery.

Each unit has its abilities, which can be exploited to the full: conscripts can join a decimated unit, elite soldiers can throw grenades or smoke bombs, mortars can bombard a given area… But the engineers are the most useful, since they can lay mines, sabotage an obstacle to allow a bulky vehicle through, lay barbed wire, sandbags, or even build bunkers.

Cold Weather

This is all the more true as the journey to Russia is accompanied by the arrival of blizzards and ice. Far from being insignificant, these additions add real value to the gameplay. Relic has taken care of its subject, as units are now sensitive to cold.

So it’s important not to expose them for too long, taking regular breaks in a shelter or near a fire. And beware: the fool who ignores these elementary rules could lose the battle before it’s even begun! Similarly, snow can slow progress considerably and must also be considered. But it’s above all the use of ice that impresses.

The repeated passage of chariots over a river can weaken the ice, which can crack and swallow the unfortunate person who finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. It’s also possible to force the issue by placing explosive charges on certain key points before detonating them as a powerful unit passes.

TrueSight

A new unit line-of-sight management system, TrueSight, enhances the tactical aspect. This system is quite impressive in use, particularly when using smoke. In this case, a soldier can start firing anywhere, while the player has a perfect view of the enemy. You can take advantage of this moment of confusion to discreetly throw a grenade into a bunker and then go back to hiding quietly.

On the other hand, you may be unpleasantly surprised to see a powerful German tank emerge from the fog and decimate troops before they have time to take cover. Generally, CoH2 plays heavily on emotions and tension, relying on tactical and nervous combat during which the action is intense.

It’s during these moments that the technical quality of the software really comes into its own: dust rises, bodies fly, others continue to run headlong towards a shell hole, buildings collapse, fire spreads across the few trees still standing… In short, Relic is a sight to behold, whether you’re playing at maximum zoom level or from afar.

Game Modes

In addition to the main campaign, there is a skirmish mode. This is distinguished by its strong multiplayer dimension, since it only includes team games (up to 4) against human players or the AI. But don’t expect any free-for-all: a Russian team plays a German team, and that’s it.

From here on in, there are two distinct game modes. The first is a Domination mode, in which you must take and hold certain strategic points long enough, while the second involves destroying the enemy base. The experience gained in each game is used to level up, unlocking new bonuses for units, new skins, and new generals.

The latter grant powers and various cooldown bonuses that can be used in the heat of battle (new weapons, bombardment, air support, etc.). At this stage, a slight criticism can be levelled at the balancing act: the Russians have many inexpensive troops, while Germany can count on expensive but extremely resistant tanks.
