Game Overview

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is an Action, FPS, Multiplayer, War, and Battle Royal game developed by Treyarch, and published by Activision in October 2018 as the 4th release of the Black Ops series, and 16th installment in the main “Call of Duty” series. As you’d expect, you’ll now be able to use simply more weapons, enjoy modern graphics, and enjoy the new story. As before, several game modes, zombie battles, and other interesting features will all be attached for an unforgettable adventure.

Gameplay

This part promised big changes since its inception, the first of which was the abandonment of the single-player story mode that does not require a network connection, and the development team’s justification was that the majority of players were spending their time in the multiplayer mode, so they decided to focus all their development time on it.

That’s not the only change, this installment is a major shift for the series, as some of the core mechanics have been removed, such as recovering from hits is no longer automatic and you have to use healing tools. This is also the first installment and game from a major company to jump into the battle royale world and introduce this mode into their game.

Gameplay Changes

Manual healing replaces automatic regeneration—players must activate a limited-use health injector, leaving them vulnerable during use. Advanced movement mechanics like wall-running and jetpacks are removed, favoring grounded combat. Specialists return with new and familiar faces (Nomad, Battery, Recon, Ajax, etc.), each offering unique abilities. For example, Recon’s Sensor Dart reveals enemies on the minimap, but abilities require strategic timing due to lengthy cooldowns.

Multiplayer

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s multiplayer remains the core experience, featuring 14 maps (including 4 remastered from the original Black Ops) and 8 modes. Returning modes like Hardpoint and Domination are joined by new additions such as Heist and Control. In Heist, players start with minimal gear, earn money through kills and objectives, and strategically purchase equipment between rounds. Teams win by extracting a money bag or eliminating opponents. Control mirrors Overwatch’s objective-based structure, pitting 5v5 teams with limited respawns—attackers aim to secure two objectives, while defenders must exhaust attacker lives. Downed players can be revived unless finished off, adding tactical depth.

Zombies Mode

The fan-favorite Zombies mode returns with three launch maps (plus an exclusive fourth for PS4). New training missions help newcomers learn the ropes, while veterans can craft perk drinks, including one that revives entire teams. Players can now share weapons from the mystery box or enlist AI teammates if human players are unavailable. However, zombie AI occasionally exhibits unpolished pathfinding, detracting from the experience.

Specialists Missions

Replacing the traditional single-player campaign, Specialists Missions allows players to master 10 unique characters through short CG cinematics and AI-based missions. These missions double as tutorials for abilities, maps, and modes. A built-in gameplay recorder is available across all modes for content creators.

Blackout (Battle Royale)

The 100-player Blackout mode blends Call of Duty’s signature speed with battle royale mechanics. Solo, duo, or squad matches unfold on a map featuring callbacks to iconic Black Ops locations like Firing Range. Perks such as Skulker (increased crouch speed) and gear like expanded inventory bags add depth. While the fast-paced combat and parachuting heighten excitement, rapid healing can feel unbalanced. Visually, Blackout stands out among battle royale titles, maintaining detail despite the large-scale map and player count.
