The Penumbra Collection Is a small collection of games. All from the same development studio. The titles refer to first-person survival horror games. The projects differ from other representatives of the genre in their freedom of action, a high degree of interactivity and adventurous puzzles.
The Penumbra Collection includes the entire trilogy. The first part is called the overture (“Penumbra 1. The Origins of Evil”, also known as “Dark World” in another translation). It introduces players to Philip Lafresque. After the death of his mother, a 30-year-old man receives a letter from his estranged father saying he was presumed dead and finds himself in Greenland. His search for a relative led him to an abandoned mine, where an unstable miner nicknamed Red radioed him. The sequel (Black Plague or otherwise “The Dead Man’s Diaries”) picks up where the original ended. The protagonist is stunned and locked in a room. He escapes and finds himself in an underground base where all sorts of devilry is going on. In the sequel, Requiem (“Requiem”), the story picks up where it left off in the last game. The same hero wakes up in a tomb and begins to experience deja vu.
Gameplay is based on physics and non-standard interaction with the environment. For example: to unlock the door, don’t press a button here, instead click and move the mouse to mimic turning the button, and then pull it yourself. If you stop moving, the door will appear ajar. In the original title you can throw things at monsters, attack them with a pickaxe, catch them, steal them, lock them in cages or rooms. You also have to explore locations and solve puzzles. In the sequel, the creators removed combat and forced you to constantly hide from enemies. And in the last part they simplified the quest component.
