Wing Commander: Armada Brings new strategic elements to the gameplay. At the beginning of each game, the user takes control of the mother ship called the aircraft carrier. Without this vehicle, the player cannot build or colonize other worlds. Victory or defeat is only achieved by destroying the enemy or friendly mothership.

The main flight base has a specific warehouse for storing and applying resources when building and occupying new territories. The player is able to build fighters to explore distant corners or fight small groups of the enemy. Maps are presented in huge dimensions, and to reach a certain point you have to use hyperspace tunnels. To colonize a planet, the user simply needs to build a space shipyard, mine, or star fortress on the surface.

Each space body has its own number of depleted resources that it can mine. Mines are busy extracting valuable materials and delivering them to the warehouse. In the space shipyard, the user can build light, medium and heavy fighters or an ordinary resource transporter. Star Fortress offers a specific type of upgrades to choose from. Battle mode is only available for multiplayer and story campaign for single player.
