Astonishing Super Mario Bros. X is the fact that it is entirely a fan project inspired by the original parts of the series. Here, all the mechanics known to users as well as some innovations are harmoniously integrated into the overall concept. Five characters are available to players throughout the game playthrough: Mario, Luigi, Todd, Princess Pitch, and Link. Although the latter is nominally part of a different story, it still has some levels and even special mechanics of its own.

The essence of the gameplay in Super Mario Bros. X is no different from the original projects. The user must wade through lined levels, overcome obstacles and deal with enemies. There are still secret blocks under which you can get a mushroom, extra coins or something more valuable. When you complete a level, all stats are saved and you can return to completed locations to attempt to complete them again if you wish.
