Mothmen 1966 is a visual novel. It has a few differences from other members of the genre. First of all, the image here is not stylized for anime. Instead, it mimics the graphics of very early computer adventure games from the 1980s. Secondly, the usual text-reading and line-picking or action-choosing gameplay is diluted here by a significant number of mini-games. There are scenes with QTEs, quest moments with puzzles, and even episodes with battles (it has its own combat system). Third, this game has the feel of a tabloid. Writer Nico Saraintaris was responsible for writing the story. The narrative is stylized as a mid-20th century crime thriller. The story is divided into chapters. Fourth, characters can die in many ways. The game has different death screens.

The Mothmen 1966 video game is part of the Pixel Pulps series, which also includes two other projects. The project is based on American urban legends (including the Mothman) and conspiracy theories. The plot revolves around 3 people: Major Lee, his pregnant wife Victoria and Holt, who owns a gas station. Depending on the act, one of these characters temporarily becomes the protagonist. All of these people (and one paranormal researcher) are accidentally drawn into a story of conspiracies, meteor showers, government agents and monsters in November 1966.
