True peace is built over time, with many different processes and approaches that move conflict into lasting, harmoniously relationships. It requires action at many differing levels, by diverse people, in various ways, and at contrasting points in a conflict. Even if the internationally-supported peace agreement can be effectively implemented, social reconciliation will require a long-term process to address the civil war legacy of mistrust, as well as the new scars which have resulted from the recent war: gross violations of human rights, a massive humanitarian crisis and a deepening of inter-communal ethnic polarization, especially among youth, who make up the majority of the fighting forces. For there to be sustainable peace, South Sudan’s and international areas of conflict formal peace process must therefore be accompanied by innovative reconciliation and healing processes, resulting in re-building of inter-communal relationships and dialogue to enhance social cohesion.
